Mauve was the first mod I managed to publish. It is very much a product of the maps that inspired me early on, in both atmosphere and gameplay. I often think of this map as a direct fusion between Holly's The Climb and CANADIAN's Heart of the Storm, both well-known maps in the foundational Spring Collab--an enormous collaboration project published relatively early in the community's lifetime that pushed the boundaries and set the standards of Celeste modding as a medium.
I could write for days about what makes this mod great, but in short, The Climb is a map that presents the player with an indifferent environment. A world that feels like it existed long before the player for a purpose far beyond their understanding, and any gameplay that arises is simply by chance. Paradoxically, it is a digital world that doesn't feel designed. According to Holly, it was originally inspired by Rain World, a game that has become one of my favorites of all time. This was the map that inspired Mauve's atmosphere most directly. The gameplay was inspired by Heart of the Storm, and particularly one infamous gameplay segment known as A Nice View
. It is difficult to explain just how ahead of its time this room was. To avoid going into the technical details, the room requires the player to use a combination of two bits of advanced tech--ultras and cornerboosts, both of which were largely unexplored at the time--to build up speed exponentially over the course of 5 to 6 second string of inputs. It is not very well
designed,
but it is easily one of the most influential rooms of Celeste modded gameplay.
